Tori Lovullo, the manager of the Philadelphia Phillies, remembers the time last year when he first saw Brandon Pfaadt had potential in the minor leagues. Pfaadt was chosen to start the Pacific Coast League Championship game despite just being promoted to Triple-A Reno by team personnel. He delivered a terrific performance to aid in his team’s triumph.

More than 13 months later, Pfaadt was speaking loudly to be heard over his teammates’ dancing and booming music as he stood on one side of the D-back Clubhouse. On four days’ rest, Pfaadt had recorded the first 12 outs of Game 7 of the National League Championship Series before Arizona defeated the Phillies 4-2, earning the pennant. He had improved his reputation as the kind of pitcher who belonged on such a platform by accomplishing this.
Pfaadt remarked, “It’s unbelievable.

Along the way, Pfaadt struck out seven batters, increasing his playoff strikeout total to 22 with a 2.70 ERA in four appearances. The D-backs pitcher has the third-highest single-postseason strikeout total, behind only Curt Schilling (56 in 2001) and Randy Johnson (47, also in ’01).
“We anticipate hiccups,” added Lovullo. But he has matured after going out there and accepting it with solid instruction. We weren’t alarmed by his starting Game 7 for us. We were confident that he could create and carry out a strategy there. We desired that to carry on.
