Tom Emmer, the Majority Leader, who quickly dropped his quest for the speakership on Tuesday afternoon as it was threatened, has frequently tried to balance several moderate voting records with the support of the Republican Party’s Donald Trump coalition.

After Kevin McCarthy was abruptly removed from the position on October 3 in an unprecedented move, this action was taken just hours after it became clear that he would be Minnesota Republicans’ choice for the position of House Republican Speaker. Emmer could only afford to lose four Republicans because the GOP holds a razor-thin majority in the House; nonetheless, 26 Republicans secretly voted against him. Despite a recent phone discussion with Trump over the weekend, the former leader has recently kept up his criticism of Emmer on his social media page Truth.
Republicans who oppose Emmer told CNN on Tuesday that they won’t back down and will seek a different candidate.

South Republicans in the Republican Conference have criticized Emmer for supporting same-sex marriage and voting for bipartisan legislation, among other things, to avoid default.
Most crucially, he cast a vote to certify the results of the 2020 presidential election, refuting Trump’s repeated claims that the results were fraudulent.
Emmer has previously backed the outgoing leader, though. Before the Speaker vote, Emmer even denied criticizing President Biden’s election victory in a CNN interview and in public remarks that CNN analyzed. Emmer also blasted the media for casting doubt on the outcome of the 2020 election.
Emmer was chosen as the majority leader at the start of this year after being first elected to Congress from Minnesota in 2014. Emmer was a state representative from 2004 to 2008 before he decided to run for governor of Minnesota in 2010. He presently serves on the House Financial Services Committee and formerly served as chairman of the National Republican Congressional Committee.
Emmer has prior experience leading a narrow GOP majority as the majority leader. McCarthy won after 15 rounds of voting, according to Republican Representative Patrick McHenry, the current Acting House Speaker, who claims that Emmer brokered talks between 20 hardliners and the Speaker’s office.
During the convention, McCarthy had supported Emmer for House Speaker and urged conference participants to vote for him.

Some lawmakers suggested Emmer as a potential replacement for McCarthy as Speaker soon after, but he promptly sided with House Majority Leader Steve Scalise, who later failed to win over the GOP.

Ralph Norman, a representative from South Carolina and a member of the House Freedom Caucus, said on Tuesday that while they “weren’t happy with that vote,” in reference to Emmer’s choice to certify the 2020 election, they had not yet decided whether or not to support him.
